Dadpe Pohe or Flat Rice Snack

Back in the days when I was doing what every Mumbaiite  does, having a bitch of a commute every day for work in the overly crowded local trains, the thing that I would look forward to every evening when I got home was this snack. When I was two stations away from my destination, I would ring Mom and let her know I am almost there. So she would get onto making this delicious, light and healthy snack along with a nice cuppa chai. I would sit with her narrate the events of my day, eat, drink chai & watch some prime time television :).
Oh the memories associated with certain food items are just unbelievable, they never leave you & every time you make the same dish they take you right back to the first time you fell in love with it.
I have always loved dadpe pohe, and there are many ways to make it, some make it wet using freshly grated coconut or coconut milk, some make it with green chilies, but I like it this way. This is exactly how Mom makes it and that is how I love it and now Mr N loves it too. :)
So here’s presenting a dish packed with a punch and something I love to eat on a long, tiring day, I think it just is the ultimate form of comfort food for me & Mr N.

Ingredients: Makes for 2
  • 2 Cups Medium Flat Rice Flakes or Pohe
  • 1 Large onion chopped
  • 3 tbsp. Ground roasted peanuts or danyacha kut
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp. Sugar
  • Pinch of red chili powder
  • 1 tsp. Turmeric powder
  • 2-3 tsp. Oil
Method:
  1. In a pan roast the flakes till slightly golden brown.
  2. Remove in a bowl & add the onion, chili, turmeric, salt, sugar, ground peanuts and mix well.
  3. Drizzle the oil & give everything a good mix with the help of 2 spoons.

You can garnish with some freshly chopped coriander but like I said before I love it just this way.
