Ganesh festival is not complete without Modaks & Khirapat.
Of course I don’t have all the authentic ingredients to make khirapat, like fresh coconut, khadisakhar etc, but this is what I devised & it tastes like khirapat & that’s what matters, right? :)
Ganapati bappa moray, mangalmurti moray!!
Ingredients: Makes a bowl full
- 4-5 Dates or khajur (de-seeded)
- ½ Cup dry desiccated coconut or 1 Cup fresh grated coconut
- 2 tbsp. Poppy seeds
- 2 tsps. Cinnamon powder (optional)
- 2-3 tsps. Cardamom powder
- ¼ Cup Almonds (Crushed)
- ½ Cup Brown sugar
- Roast the dates, take them out of the pan & blend to a coarse powder.
- Roast the coconut & poppy seeds.
- In a serving bowl mix the roasted coconut, poppy seeds, ground dates, cinnamon, cardamom powder, sugar & crushed almonds.
Khirapat is ready.
Trivia- If I remember correctly khirapat is a mixture of 5 ingredients all starting with "K" in marathi, i.e. khadisakhar, kismis, kharik, khobra and khaskhas.

The taste of how my granny made it, is still with me :)
Hope you are having a wonderful Ganesh Festival!!
